Engel, Barbara Alpern. Between the fields and the city : women, work, and family in Russia, 1861-1914 / Barbara Alpern Engel. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 1996. - xi, 254 с. : ил., карты, табл. - Загл. обл. : Between the fields & the city. - Библиогр.: с. 244. - Указ.: с. 248

Inthe period following the mancipation of the serfs, Russia began to industrialize and its peasants to interact with a market economy. Thousands of peasants, male and female, left their villages to earn wages elsewhere. The significance and consequences of peasant women's migration is the subject of Between the Fields and the City. Drawing on a wealth of new archival data containing first-person accounts of peasant women's experiences, Engel provides a detailed account of the move from village to city. Unlike previous studies, this one looks at the impact of migration on the peasantry and at the experience of peasant workers in nearby factories and illuminates the personal dimensions of economic and social change.
